Myth #5: “Hypoallergenic” cosmetics will not cause allergic reaction.

These days when allergies are on the rise, it seems like everyone is allergic to something. Even when it comes to skin care products and makeup, there are a lot of people who t

To avoid these unpleasant allergic reactions one might think that Hypoallergenic cosmetics are the safer and gentler option for sensitive skin.

Truth: Hypoallergenic only means that the product does not contain most common allergens, ingredients that are known to cause allergic reactions. But anyone can be allergic to anything, so Hypoallergenic does not mean Nonallergenic.

Another claim that is synonym to Hypoallergenic is “100% Allergy Tested”. All it means that some of the product ingredients that are common allergens were tested on a group of people who tend to get allergic reactions, and none of the test group members got a reaction.

It is absolutely impossible to guarantee that cosmetic product will not cause the allergic reaction in someone. We are all so different, and you never know how your body is going to react to certain things.

Legally manufacturers cannot put Nonallergenic on the label this is why Hypoallergenic term was created. So this is just another way to make cosmetics more appealing to buyers and to make them think that it is a better choice for sensitive skin because it might be gentler.

For those of you who have sensitive skin that is prone to allergic reactions, I highly recommend that you always do a patch test before you try a new product.

I understand that it can be challenging to sort it all out and stay educated about the skin care and makeup ingredients and claims, especially when one source telling you one thing and another source will tell you the complete opposite. But I hope you will find a professional who will help you and who you can trust and I hope that you find that with me and my company, Olessya Slivko Skin Therapy & Lash Studio.
